Hands-On Learning for Indigenous Youth in Skilled Trades

Hands-On Learning for Indigenous Youth in Skilled Trades

The Indigenous Skilled Trades Training Program is an innovative initiative aimed at empowering Indigenous youth through hands-on learning in skilled trades. By collaborating with funding partners such as the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, this program provides students with the opportunity to earn while they learn, ensuring that they acquire practical skills that are essential for future career pathways. Administered through the Lakehead Social Planning Council, this program is designed to create a supportive environment where Indigenous youth can thrive.
A key component of the program is the mentorship provided by experienced professionals in the field. For instance, Sam Sobush, an electrician from the Red Rock Indian Band, has shared his expertise with students, guiding them through the complexities of electrical work. This mentorship not only enhances the students’ technical abilities but also encourages them to consider careers in the trades, fostering a sense of belonging and purpose within the community.
In addition to electrical training, participants are also gaining hands-on experience in plumbing through collaboration with the team at Clow Darling. This multifaceted approach to skilled trades education prepares students for future apprenticeship pathways, equipping them with the real-world skills necessary to succeed in the workforce. The commitment of community partners plays a crucial role in the success of this initiative, as they help create opportunities for Indigenous youth to build a brighter future through skilled trades.
