Community Spirit Shines at Thunder Bay’s Annual CommUNITY BBQ

Thunder Bay recently witnessed a heartwarming display of community support at the annual CommUNITY BBQ, where locals gathered to enjoy good food and good company while supporting a noble cause.

Hosted by the United Way of Thunder Bay at the RFDA headquarters, this year’s event welcomed a new participant, The Rowan Tree Collective. Alongside longstanding partners like the RFDA and Dew Drop Inn, the event aimed to raise funds and awareness for community initiatives.

The highlight of the event was the initiative to “pay it forward” to The Rowan Tree Collective. Attendees were invited to contribute $10, which will go towards hosting a special barbecue for families associated with The Rowan Tree Collective later this summer. Founded to support families of young adults with autism and exceptionalities, The Rowan Tree Collective focuses on fostering inclusivity and community spirit in Thunder Bay.

Michelle Murdoch-Gibson, co-founder of The Rowan Tree Collective, expressed gratitude for the support, stating, “We are thrilled to collaborate with RFDA, Dew Drop Inn, and United Way. It’s wonderful to see the community come together like this.”

The barbecue itself was a festive affair, complete with hamburgers, hotdogs, and the beloved Dewy Dog. Attendees also participated in activities like mini-duck races and the dunk tank, all under sunny skies that drew a steady stream of supporters.

Albert Brule, CEO of United Way Thunder Bay, highlighted the event’s significance beyond fundraising: “It’s not just about the money; it’s about partnership and collaboration. We believe in the power of community and working together, underscoring how collective efforts can make a significant impact, supporting organizations like The Rowan Tree Collective in their mission to create a more inclusive and supportive community.”
