Our son Henry was diagnosed with autism in 2022. Like many parents in similar situations, we felt overwhelmed and alone. Navigating the complexities of autism spectrum disorder seemed like an insurmountable task, and we struggled to find the support and resources we desperately needed.
After a year of grappling with these challenges, we made a decision—one that would change not only our lives but the lives of countless others in our community. In October 2023, we took the initiative to start a support group for caregivers of autistic children. Our meetings, held once a month at the Habit Coffee Shop, became a lifeline for us and for many others who were navigating similar journeys.
As we listened to the incredible stories shared within our group and got to know the remarkable individuals who attended, we realized that we were not alone—that there was strength in community and support. It was from this realization that the idea for Autism Northwest was born.
Autism Northwest is more than just a registered non-profit organization—it’s a beacon of hope, a sanctuary for families like ours who are seeking understanding, acceptance, and assistance. Our mission is simple yet profound: to create a supportive environment where children with autism can thrive through recreational activities and core therapy, promoting social interaction, sensory integration, and overall well-being.
But we knew that to truly make a difference, we needed resources. That’s why the funds we raise through upcoming and future initiatives will be dedicated to helping families who are stuck on long government wait-lists, waiting for the support they need and deserve.
Our very first fundraising event is just around the corner—a golf tournament on June 14 at the Fort William Country Club. It’s a four-person team scramble, followed by a dinner and a silent auction.
We invite you to stand with us in our mission to make a difference in the lives of autistic children and their families. Whether it’s through participating in our golf tournament, volunteering your time and talents, or simply spreading the word, your support means the world to us.
Sincerely,
Mark Kehl
