United Way of Thunder Bay (UWTB) strives to make meaningful long-term improvements to the quality of life for all people.

The event, titled “Living on the Edge: Taking a Look at Poverty,” is a unique and immersive experience designed to provide participants with a glimpse into the daily realities faced by families living in low-income situations. During the simulation, participants will be placed in family units and given a summary of their financial situation. Over the course of two to three hours, they will navigate through various challenges such as sending children to school or childcare, finding work, paying bills, accessing social services, and purchasing groceries. Following the simulation, there will be an opportunity for participants to come together for a facilitated debrief, where they can share their experiences, insights, and emotions. This discussion is integral to deepening our understanding of poverty and its impact on individuals and families in our community. There will be 30 minutes of volunteer training prior to the start of the event. Volunteers will represent each of the categories for participants to visit (social services, grocery stores, paying bills etc.)

The event will take place on Wednesday May 29th from 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Urban Abbey. Lunch will be provided by the Dew Drop Inn.

We believe that by participating in this simulation, you will gain valuable insights into the complexities of poverty and its effects on our community. Your involvement will not only benefit you personally but will also contribute to our collective efforts to address this issue and create positive change.

If you are interested in participating in this event, tickets can be purchased here. The fee is $25.00 per person and includes lunch and refreshments. Registrants who do not attend (without cancellation notice of 3 business days prior) may be charged a fee to recover meal costs associated with their registration.
