Thunder Bay Community Foundation Grants $140,000 in Scholarships and Bursaries

Each year, the Thunder Bay Community Foundation awards graduating high school students with Scholarships and Bursaries to assist them with their post-secondary education. These awards will help the recipients pay for things such as tuition, books, supplies, general living expenses, and more. Without the continued support of the donors of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation, our Scholarships and Bursaries would not be possible.

During their application process, the Foundation received 141 applications from students from the Thunder Bay and District areas. After the evaluations, the Thunder Bay Community Foundation is pleased to announce that 38 students will receive Scholarships and Bursaries totaling $140,000.

“I would like to thank our incredible donors who make all of this possible. Without them, we could not do what we do. I would also like to congratulate all 38 of our student recipients. The future of our city looks very bright!” says Mike Belliveau, Chair of the Thunder Bay Community Foundation.

On June 8, 2023, the Thunder Bay Community Foundation held its first in-person Scholarship and Bursary Reception since 2019. Students, parents, donors, and school representatives attended the event to recognize and acknowledge the 2023 Student Recipients.

Susan Lester, donor of the Justice Ronald B. Lester Memorial Bursary explains, “The Justice Ronald B. Lester Memorial Youth Bursary was established by the Lester family to honour Ron’s legacy of dedication and commitment to youth justice, education, and community service. Since its inception in 2000, the year of Justice Lester’s passing, bursaries have been awarded to 54 graduating high school students totaling $280,000 in funding; enabling students facing financial barriers to pursue their dreams of post-secondary education. The bursary criteria is demonstrated financial need and outstanding community service and is one of the largest family bursaries in the region with an award of $7,500. The Lester family is very proud and pleased that the Justice Ronald B Lester Memorial is one of the many Thunder Bay Community Foundation’s scholarships and bursaries servicing the educational needs of Northwestern Ontario students. The Foundation’s expertise in administration and financial monitoring of our family’s bursary is outstanding.”
