The Great Lighthouse Rescue

Ahoy!

For the second year, groups of castaways, representing vital community agencies supported by the United Way, will find themselves stranded out at the Thunder Bay Main Lighthouse on Lake Superior. In order for these courageous castaways to be rescued and safely returned to Prince Arthur’s Landing, they must send out an S.O.S. for donations.

The actual rescues will be executed by the Royal Canadian Navy and the gallant sailors of HMCS Griffon. Honorary Captains and rescue crews will have the opportunity to join HMCS Griffon personnel aboard a 24ft Rigid-Hulled Inflatable Boat as they brave the stormy waters o’ Lake Superior to rescue the stranded castaways and return them safely to the marina – along with a few high-speed turns and evasive maneuvers as they speed across the harbour!

These Honorary Captains will also be tasked with raising donations of their own, helping castaways reach their goals and return to land.

Rescues will be undertaken from Pier 3 throughout the day, starting at 10:00 am until approximately 5:00 pm.

Members of the public are invited to come down to Marina Park to cheer on and support the agency castaways and courageous rescue captains, and enjoy:

  • Family fun activities and face painting
  • A Sea Shanty Sing-Along with The Foundry Singers at 1:00pm
  • Tasty grub from Beefcake’s Burger Factory, as well as Twisted Ice Cream and the Poppin’ Hut with Lemon Squeeze
  • Harbour Tours with Sail Superior (More details below)
  • High-powered binoculars
  • And MORE!

Not to mention, participating agencies will be setting up info booths on the Big Green Lawn where attendees can learn more about the programs they offer and their commitment to building a stronger community.

All funds donated will go to support crucial community programming and services to meet the needs of local people.

Land ho!

VOICES

Get swept away by one of the most popular classical pieces of all time: Bach’s Concerto in D Minor for 2 violins, played by a truly talented TBSO couple, Christopher Stork and Kimberly Durflinger. Thunder Bay Symphony Chorus takes the stage for Bach’s unforgettable cantata “Nach Dir, Herr, verlanget mich”, which translates roughly to “For you, Lord, is my desire.” On top of that, we get to hear a Baroque-inspired contemporary jewel, “Baroque Melting” by Vivian Fung. And it doesn’t stop there! Featuring pieces by Purcell, Gluck, and Rebel, this concert promises to be a wild emotional ride – and a good time!

Purcell – Selections from The Fairy Queen
Bach – Concerto in D minor for two violins – Christopher Stork & Kimberly Durflinger
Vivaldi – La Follia Trio Sonata in D Minor
Fung – Baroque Melting
Rebel – Les Élémens
