Newmont Musselwhite Mine

“LARGE BUSINESS EXCELLENCE” AWARD

Newmont Musselwhite has expanded its economic growth over the past year by advancing the ore body in the PQ Deeps mining zone, which accounts for over 60 percent of the mine reserves and future production. The PQD Extension Project will allow for continued employment and contractor support, with a strong focus on local and Indigenous employment and procurement opportunities, which are of utmost importance to them. In 2023, their workforce consisted of over 24 percent Indigenous employees and contractors, with approximately $82M, or 37% of its total spend, allocated to local and Indigenous procurement.

At Newmont, our vision is that everyone belongs, thrives, and is valued. Newmont Musselwhite has implemented an Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (ID&E) program to enhance the employee environment on-site by creating a psychologically safe environment for all. Additionally, they have made advances in better supporting women and the LGBTQ community in the workplace.

They seek opportunities to support local communities in key focus areas such as Education, Health & Safety, Local Economic Development, Social/Arts/Culture & Recreation, and Diversity. They maintain several long-time partnerships with local organizations, including Wake the Giant, United Way of Thunder Bay, Hospice Northwest, St. Joseph’s Foundation, the Underground Gym, and the Festival of India. In 2023, Musselwhite committed to two multi-year contributions with the RFDA and NorthWind Family Ministries, and sponsored the Ontario Winter Games.

Quality performance is measured in multiple ways at Newmont Musselwhite Mine. Operational, Safety, Social, Environmental, and Employee performance are all key metrics that Musselwhite and Newmont utilize. Operational performance is measured through key performance indicators, Safety through The Fatality Risk Management system and Critical Control Verifications. In collaboration with the corporate team, the site completes an Annual Sustainability Report to share its performance on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) requirements.

Newmont Musselwhite exemplifies Large Business Excellence.
